How do pool solar panels work?
Solar panels can be fitted to the roof of a building, laid on the ground or mounted on plywood or other suitable, purpose built structures. On the top and bottom of these panels are collector tubes (generally, PVC pipes), which distribute the water, and carry the solar heated water back to the pool. Water from the pool is channelled through the panels and is heated by the suns' rays. The water is then returned to the pool by the existing pool pump. Depending on the amount of solar panels to total water volume ratio, temperatures of 22º C to 41º C can be achieved with zero additional power consumption. It is a very simple yet effective system which has greatly reduced the cost of utilizing solar heat for swimming pools.
Standard pool solar collectors require a bank of panels equivalent to approximately 76% of the surface area of the pool depending on the geographical location. Ideally, solar panels should be mounted on a horizontally angled bank pitched at 15 to 45 degree, and should preferably if possible be mounted in a Southern facing position. In the majority of cases, the recommended solar panel-to-water volume converts to a ratio of one solar panel per 10 000 L water volumes. The majority of pool builders recommend that one additional solar panel is added to this ratio to ensure optimal performance across all seasons. The distance between the swimming pool pump system and the solar panels must be taken into consideration when designing and sitting such a system.
